CASE 1: ABOUT THIS
This thesis undertakes a critical examination of the philosophical problem of suffering, arguing that its significance extends far beyond the mere experience of pain to challenge the very foundations of meaning, value, and human agency. While empirical disciplines seek to understand the physiological and psychological mechanisms of suffering, this inquiry addresses its normative and existential dimensions, asking not only what suffering is, but what it means for the individual and the collective. By engaging with a diverse range of philosophical traditions—from classical theodicies that attempt to reconcile suffering with a benevolent deity, to existentialist frameworks that posit suffering as an inescapable condition of freedom, and finally to contemporary ethical discourses on trauma, empathy, and care—this study posits that suffering functions as a fundamental, albeit disruptive, site of philosophical interrogation. It is through the lens of suffering, I contend, that we most acutely confront the limits of reason, the fragility of happiness, and the profound human need to forge significance in a world marked by vulnerability and loss.
